About this Workshop

This is a beginner session, focusing on the context that basic applications can provide to spatial data. We will begin by providing a brief overview of data and data sets, then participants will make a simple interactive map in ArcGIS Online, focusing on what aspects of the data are revealed by the ArcGIS mapping capabilities. Once participants make this sample map, we will talk about the StoryMaps platform and specifically how that platform can showcase and further contextualize the created map. Participants will then be able to make a StoryMap with their created ArcGIS map, then share their StoryMap with other workshop participants. We envision this workshop as an approachable 2-day introduction to spatial mapping for participants who are new to the topic or to the applications.

Workshop Outcomes

Participants will:

  • gain familiarity with basic digital mapping in ArcGIS Online and digital presentation in StoryMaps.
  • analyze spatial data, focusing on context.
  • consider how they might use ArcGIS Online and StoryMaps in their own work, teaching, and scholarship.
